The Art of Felting

Felting is the art of transforming merino wool into a unique material, soft, resilient and full of life.

Through movement, soapy water and time, the fibres intertwine to give life to pieces that are both functional and poetic.

Merino wool, a natural material patiently shaped by hand.

A Material Born of Wool and Water

Felting is one of the oldest textile-making processes in the world. Long before weaving, wool fibres were already being transformed into a supple, warm and durable material through a simple combination of wool, water, soap and movement.

Wool has a precious natural quality. Each of its fibres is naturally covered with tiny scales. When exposed to warm water, soap and friction, they open and catch onto one another. Little by little, the fibres intertwine until they form a dense and cohesive textile: felt.

This process requires neither thread nor needle nor loom. It does, however, call for patience, attentiveness and a deep understanding of the material. The wool evolves in the artisan’s hands: it tightens, transforms, gains volume or becomes finer according to the pressure applied and the time spent working it.

Wet felting thus gives birth to a living material, never quite identical from one creation to the next. It is this singularity that gives it its charm.

The Softness of Merino Wool

Fine, soft and wonderfully pleasant to the touch, merino wool is chosen for its natural qualities. It allows us to create breathable, warm and comfortable textiles, where colours blend with subtlety.

Naturally breathable, wool helps regulate temperature. It provides warmth when the air is cool while allowing the material to breathe. Beyond its practical qualities, it offers great visual richness: shades can overlap, blend together and reveal themselves in new ways throughout the felting process.

The Traditional Art of Wet Felting

The process begins with preparing the fibres. The wool is laid out in fine layers, in different directions, to form an even and balanced base. Depending on the project, the colours are then arranged to create patterns, gradients, lines or contrasts.

The wool is then moistened with warm water and soap. At first, the movements are very gentle: the composition must be preserved, the fibres kept in place and encouraged to adhere without disturbing them. Then comes the time for rubbing, rolling and shaping.

Rhythm is essential: enough movement to bring the fibres together, enough gentleness to let the material retain all its suppleness.

Gradually, the material becomes denser, takes its final shape and becomes a unique creation. The art lies in recognising the right moment: when the felt is strong enough while still retaining the desired softness and flexibility.

Did You Know?

The tiny scales found on each wool fibre open under the action of water, soap and movement. This natural phenomenon allows felt to form without sewing or weaving.

A Durable Textile for Everyday Life

Wool felt is a strong material, made to last when cared for with attention. Wool naturally contains lanolin, which helps repel some dirt. In many cases, simply airing the piece is enough to restore its freshness.

  • Air your wool creation regularly.
  • For small stains, favour gentle, local and quick cleaning.
  • Avoid very hot water, vigorous rubbing and tumble drying.
  • Allow it to dry naturally, flat and away from direct heat.

Between Tradition and Contemporary Creation

Decorative objects, accessories or artistic pieces: felting opens an endlessly free space for creativity. Fibres meet, colours blend and each piece bears the mark of patient, sensitive and entirely handmade work.

From the softness of merino wool to the patient work of water and hands, each creation celebrates a natural material and a craft passed down through time. Unique textiles, imagined to find their place in everyday life and journey through it with you.

The Beauty of a Living Object

Choosing a felted creation means choosing a unique object, carefully shaped by hand and made to accompany you for years to come.
